Epigenetics in the Etiology of Chronic Diseases

Kyeong Yun Jeong

Several recent lines of research have shown that in addition to a genetically predisposed profile, certain epigenetic factors play an important role in both the development and progression of certain chronic diseases. Particularly diseases under the umbrella of Metabolic Syndrome, it has been demonstrated that epigenetic as well as genetic factors play a crucial role in both the presence and severity of these comorbidities. This research will focus on isolating the epigenetic regulations found with regard to these diseases. A systematic review will be performed to assess the work done to date and a comprehensive assessment of the data extracted will be performed. The subsequent review paper will aim to summarize and consolidate the relationship between the epigenetic and genetic contributions to chronic diseases under the umbrella of Metabolic Syndrome.
